Hello everyone,
I hope no one goes into shock from this feed, if so, dial 911 before you actually pass out!

I felt I owed an explanation to my loyal followers, I've just been waiting for the right time. Sometimes you just need a break from the norm to do something different and that's exactly what I've been doing for the past 6 months or so. I took a break from making jewelry, blogging about jewerly, twitting about jewelry, facebooking about jewelry, sleeping jewelry, selling jewelry, blog parties, blog hopping...and well, you should get the picture by now. The marketing effort for my jewelry business was becoming too overwhelming and for the second time, social media was taking over my life until............I got a new camera for Mother's Day....do you remember??? What started with Nikon for Dummies has grown to.....

yep...can you say anal learner???

Now don't get me wrong...jewelry is still around, along with the ton of supplies I have, I've just needed to pull myself away to refocus, not to mention silver prices were killing me! I truly miss so many of my wonderful blogging friends, but I guess you could say I had to go cold turkey on social media, it was the only way to get my life back, I hope you all understand. My goal for the jewerly business will be to rethink my strategy for the new year, rethink how and who I market to and rethink what works for me and what I'm able to manage and still be a good mom first.
You'll slowly see me begin peeping in to visit as I'm itching to see what you all have been up to!

Looking for qualified fairies to help with daily chores of a working mom. These individuals (or figments of my imaginiation) will be responsible for assisting with daily and weekly house chores, raising a teenager, as well as occasional business tasks to make my life easier...while I sleep. Additional job duties and requirements are as follow:

Major Responsibilities:

Make my life easier

Job Duties:

Compiling and finding laundry to be washed, dried, folded and put away; to include looking under bed and in closet of teenager
Preparing weekly dinner menu and cooking dinner daily (I'll take care of the grocery shopping)
Keeping Kitchen and bathrooms cleaned and sanitary, closing all doors and cabinets left open by teenager
Mopping floors and vacuuming carpet
Keeping cushions straight on sofa; to include checking between pillows for remote controls and candy wrappers and under sofa for anything the teenager didn't want to take upstairs
Assisting with organization; to include packing teenagers backpack during the night with homework left who knows where, making sure pencils are sharpened and packed.
Watering flowers inside and outside
Occasionally packaging mailers for customer shipments
Occasionally checking emails, and posting and responding to social media sites
Completing unfinished jewelry projects
Photographing jewelry

Checking answering machine and deleting old messages

Position Requirements:

Must have functional and reliable wings to work posted schedule; to include arriving on time and leaving early.
Must be honest with no criminal record, and willing to do a background check
Must be able to work overnight shift...quietly
Must be able to operate coffe maker, vacuum, dishwasher, washing machine and dryer
Must have knowledge of Microsoft Office, Internet Explorer and Outlook, answering machines
Must be familiar with social media sites such as Blogger, Facebook, Twitter, Yahoo Groups, Twitter, etc.
Ability to check Middle School homework and respond to emails
Must be able to type at least 45 words per minute or complete task by morning
Must be proficient in finishing jewelry projects; to include adding closures and wrapping wire
Must be tolerant of repeated tasks, like closing cabinets and drawers, picking up clothes and shoes, closing toilet seats and vacumming daily
Demonstrated ability to cook a complete meal; to include vegetables to the teenagers liking

Educational Requirements:

Successful completion of Middle School
Some knowledge of business writing

Weekend work may be required, apply within!

Blogger Issue Resolved - I can post comments 05/26/2011

This will be a quick post, as I'm exhausted from trying to figure out what was wrong with my blog for three days. I hope this helps anyone else on my list who is having problems with the unresolved issue or unanswered questions from blogger to date. My fix may not work for you, but hopefully it will...and hopefully mine is a permanent fix.

Problem:
I've been unable to leave response comments to those who have left comments on my blog. I've also been unable to leave comments on my fellow blogger pages, without doing so anonymously. It appears that I'm logged into my dashboard, but not signed into my page. If I try to sign it, it just keeps looping back to the log in page.

My FIX:
I suppose this will work with IE or Firefox, but the paths may be different. It appears that I had to ALLOW third party cookies for blogger. To limit it to just blogger I followed the following path in IE8:

Tools, internet options, privacy, sites. I entered http://www.blogger.com/ in the box and clicked allow. The only other thing I did was changed my comment box to a pop up window. I then closed my browser window and reopened and now I am logged in on my dashboard, as well as on my page and I can leave comments on my blog and others.

A Little Giddy...just a little!

Feeling a little giddy tonight! Okay, not a little...A LOT. Have you ever researched something til you found the right one for you only to realize you couldn't afford it? Have you ever wanted something so bad you could taste it? Ever looked at something for months and months, even years til you dreamed about it? Ever stalked the internet price comparison sites month after month, waiting for your "something" to go on sale? ...Then finally - you get it!!

If you've answered yes to any of these, and the end result was you finally getting that "something", then you know exactly how I'm feeling this week...on Monday...I GOT IT!!! Finally..................

I've been patiently waiting two years for this!! I am officially going from Point and Shoot to DSLR...yeah baby! So why did I open the box yesterday and close it back up and put it away? Was I scared by all the parts and the bigger user manual and all the buttons and knobs and pins and whistles??

Yep...so by Friday, I hope to have this............

There's a steep learning curve if I want to get the most out of this camera. The good thing is that the Nikon I currently use, has very similar menu's to this one, minus several added features and then some, but the hold is the same, and I'm "almost" not feeling quite like the dummy I thought I would be! I'm also going to start attending some of the photography meet ups I've been stalking and learn all that I can from pros.

Heres a neat photo I took tonight using one of the auto scene options. Had I done this with my regular camera, it would have barely come out...if.

Now don't get me wrong, I'm not even close to getting rid of my other camera's...yes that's plural for three. But I am thinking of sharing one of them with my son, if he acts right. He is constantly reminding me that I have too many! what do you think...is four camera's too much?

It's Strawberry Season....

Has it really been a week since my last post? Shame on me...really!! I suppose that 14 day feature really wore me out. So how are you? What have you been up to?

Well, I'm back on the wagon, rested and ready to go...tomorrow. So in the meantime, check out these nifty little earrings I recently made using strawberry ceramic beads from Rings and Things. Cool huh? Not my typical design, but I couldn' resist a fun set for the upcoming Memorial Day weekend!

Fair Trade Resource Network

Today officially ends the World Fair Trade Day Celebration for 2011. It has been another successful year, with over 50,000 participants registered so far and the numbers are still rolling in, I'm certain this year will reach larger numbers than last. I will also be reporting my blog hits for the past 14 days.

soooo..THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU....for stopping by and reading my featured articles the past 14 days and extra special thanks to those who left comments during the Feature telling me about your experience or letting me know you were learning and sharing. Thank you for all the lovely comments and for gettting me excited. If you'll remember...14 days ago, I said, "great things could happen if Dee gets excited"..well I did and I'm about to tell you what those great things are after I share some exciting news!

Exciting Fair Trade News: Chicago became the largest Fair Trade Town in the US and the second largest in the world this month. Way to go Chicago!! Your diligence the past two years brought you great success!! If you don't know...the US is lagging behind other countries in regards to Fair Trade awareness and sales, but we have been gaining strength over the past few years and with cities like Chicago leading the way, we will soon give the UK a run for their money, as they have lead the way in record sales and awareness of Fair Trade for years.

Yeah...I had to plug that last bit of knowledge before closing things down for the year.

Okay...what you've been waiting for, but not expecting until I told you right? Well, here's where I may get a little sappy, so I apologize and intend to offend no one. I truly truly appreciate all of the hits I 've received for this feature, and wish more had left comments to say hello and let me know who you were. If you've been following me for a while, you know that I'm passionate about a few things and Fair Trade just happens to be one of them. I didn't announce a drawing mainly because (1) I was writing and sharing about something that I love, to support a movement that I believe in and (2) I really wanted people to take something away from the posts and not just stop by to leave comments to win something. Linda will be recieving a Dancing Girl pin. This handcrafted pin, using discarded materals, is a long standing Fair Trade handicraft product from Kenya by a group named KICK. Residents of Kisumu learned to make items such as the Dancing Girl through a workshop. They were also taught to make jewelry, paper and home decor, leading to a workforce of craftspeople and artisans. The Dancing Girl is a novel to the traditioanl kenya crafts made from wood and soapstone. She can be worn on your lapel, backpack, purse or hat, and she'll definitely promote conversation. Congratulations Linda!

Beads For Life - Fair Trade Series Day 11

I might be tired, but I won't go down that easy...that's right I'm back! Tonight is day 11 of a 14 day series of blogging about Fair Trade. As we count down to World Fair Trade Day on May 14th, the excitement is building around the country as groups, organizations and individuals prepare to share with others what Fair Trade is all about.
Tonight I bring to you another great Fair Trade Organization called Beads For Life.

Bead for Life eradicates extreme poverty by creating bridges of understanding between impoverished Africans and concerned world citizens. Ugandan women turn colorful recycled paper into beautiful beads, and people who care open their hearts, homes and communities to buy and sell the beads. Since 2004, BeadforLife has provided sustainable income for Ugandan women and their families by selling their beautiful jewelry, handmade from recycled paper. The women are HIV+ mothers, refugees from a brutal civil war, former prostitutes and other impoverished people. Before joining BeadforLife, all of the members struggled to get by on less than $1 a day. BeadforLife acts as a ladder out of poverty, providing women not only income, but entrepreneurial training, business funding, health programs, and the chance for women to build a home of their own.

The beads thus become income, food, medicine, school fees -- and hope. It is a small miracle that enriches us all. All profits from BeadforLife are invested in community development projects that generate income and help people work their way out of poverty.

I designed a bracelet a couple of years ago, that I named "Kaleidescope of Life". The entire bracelet was made using all Fair Trade components with the exception of the spacer beads. I made 12 bracelets and donated 50% of the proceeds back to Bead for Life. They are beautiful in color and you can wear it with anything. Each bracelet came with a pamphlet that told the story behind Beads for Life, so that the owner could share the story. Of the many things I've sold, these bracelets went like hotcakes..literally!

Let's Talk Shirts - Fair Trade Series Day 13!!

Yeaahhh to Blogger for getting us up and running again!! I'm sure it's been a tiring 24+ hours for this group. In case you didn't know, Blogger was down most of yesterday and this morning; but, their tech folks were working hard to get us back up and going...so, excuse the interruption, but thank goodness we're up again!

Today is day 13 of a 14 day blogging series about Fair Trade. Tomorrow is World Fair Trade Day and with over 10,000 people signed up for events, there will be a world of celebrating going on. I myself will be heading to Ten Thousand Villages for some ice cream sundae's, a treasure hunt and to put my markings on the Fair Trade Wall! Tomorrow will not just be about celebrating, but mostly educating... so I challenge you, (if you haven't registered for an event) to share with at least two people tomorrow, the Fair Trade message of hope and empowerment.

Tonight, I will pull it all together with some imaginary producers. I got the idea from Just Shirts, a Fair Trade retailer out of Canada. With information from their site, I was sparked with an idea that gets the message across clearly of what the Fair Trade movement does to help those in developing countries move forward. So without further ado....

Let's Talk T-Shirts

The co-op group that I work for allows me health benefits, proper safety equipment and a safe working environment. I receive safety training and equitable wages and I’m allowed the opportunity to participate in the decision making process. I also receive .40 for every shirt that I produce. My co-op group works with a Fair Trade North American Importer who cares about us and our community. All of my children are able to go to school and eat healthy meals. We have a total partnership with complete transparency.

With the help of my co-op and educational opportunities, myself and several others in my village will be starting our own co-op next year, closer to our home. I'm very excited and appreciative of all that I've learned. Becoming a partner in my own business, will allow me to do even more for my family, better our living arrangements and continue education for our children.

Hi,

I would tell you my name, but it probably wouldn’t matter. I am a shirt maker in my country, but I really have no idea if the shirt you’re wearing is one that was made in my production sweat shop,or another or even in my country to be honest. I really don’t enjoy my job, but I have no other opportunities. Here we don’t get benefits and the work space is cramped with poor ventilation. Sometimes I am the victim of Harassment from the supervisors. I’ve been working here for 7 years, but I have no voice or input into anything. Wages are poor; and, I only make .10 per shirt that I produce, so I’m guessing the American Importer and the production facility makes most of the profit. I barely make enough to support my family and my children have no education.

I have to go now my boss is coming.

Are You Ready for Your Coffee Break May 14th? - Fair Trade Series Day 9

WOW! 8 days have already gone by since I started sharing with you what all the excitement is about Fair Trade. I took a tiny break yesterday to celebrate Mother's Day, but I'm back in week 2 with more great information!

As May 14th (Fair Trade Day) approaches, groups, organizations and individuals are preparing for big celebrations this Saturday and today I'm going to share with you, how you can participate as big or as small as you like, simply by sharing what you've learned through this series or what you already know.

As of today, according to the Fair Trade Resource Network, 10,0000 participants have registered Coffee Break Events for May 13-14th. Some of the events include coffee breaks, fashion shows, food tastings, music concerts, talks and many other creative ideas.

So, how can YOU participate? It doesn't have to be anything as big as the above, but the entire event should be about sharing. Try brunch or tea with some friends Saturday morning, Girls Night Out with a Movie (Featuring Fair Trade of Course), have an information booth at your Church, at work or your childs school, blog about it, post on FB or Twitter all day about it, the possibilities are endless..the main point behind May 14th is to create awareness.

If you're seriously thinking about having an event (big or small) visit the Fair Trade Resource Network and register before this Saturday, then visit their resource page and download all types of information, videos and posters to print out and to share at your event. If you're quick, you may have time to sign up for some free samples or coupons before Saturday. And most importantly come back and and LET ME KNOW!!

My small part is of course this 14 day series. I've also been sharing at work. I've created a poster "Fair Trade Coffee Break" and I'll be sitting out more goodies this week, with information pages about Fair Trade. The chocolate last week was a big hit..it's all gone! I won't be holding an event on Saturday, but I have ALL intentions of being at my local Ten Thousand Villages for an ice cream sundae, a Treasure Hunt, and to sign the Fair Trade wall! ....Can't wait.

WOW.... What a day!! Soccer game this morning, dinner with my mom this evening, and pro soccer game this evening...in the rain I'll add, but the game was full of adrenaline rushes! It's been fun but long. Tonight's post will be just the oposite of my day, as my eye are telling me to shut it down!!

Beads That Change Lives - Featured Series Day 6 (Fair Trade)

Welcome back and welcome all who are new! Okay, I've changed my mind. I think I'm allowed to do that, right? Instead of listing the top 10 reasons tonight, I've decided to tell you about some very special beads that are near and dear to my heart. Why you ask? After 6 days, you mean to tell me you don't know?? Duhh, they are fair trade of course and they are simply beautiful!!

Beads That Change Lives - Kazuri Beads

In 1975, way across the ocean in a little place known as Nairobi, Kenya, Lady Susan Wood, daughter of English Missionaries, started a business making beads in a small shed in her garden. She started her business by hiring two disadvantaged women to help make beads, but soon realized that there were many more nearby women who were in need of jobs. This idea was the birth of "Kazuri".

As a help center for needy women, especially single mothers who had no other source of income, Kazuri expanded to over 180 women and men, mostly women by 1988. One job holder often provided for an extended family of 20 or more. Workers were trained to make these beautiful beads and jewelry, using clay from the Mt Kenya area, which gives authenticity to their craft. Each bead is hand-shaped, and hand painted, with what some call "the kaleidescope colors of Africa", some also include gold and platinum.

Kazuri, the swahili word for "small and beautiful" produces a wide range of beads and jewelry. Now under new ownership, the factory continues to operate under its original philosophy of helping to provide for the disadvantaged and to provide a safe and enjoyable working environment for their crafts people.

If there's one thing I've learned from facilitating leadership classes, it's that even adults need a break. Why should anything be different here? I wouldn't be a good teacher if I didn't allow a break for some fun, so tonight we will allow our eyes and senses do all the work, as I share with you some of the different types of fair trade items around the world.

So, now you've seen only a smidgen of what's out there, but as you can see..there are many many different items available as Fair Trade. Here in the United States, coffee is the biggest seller, and I'm proud to say that I'm a contributor to that statistical data.

Hopefully you found something that you already use, that you'd like to try as a Fair Trade item or something new would be cool too! The links in this post are just a sampling of where you can find many different versions of the above...except maybe the Ten Thousand Villages items, which may be specific to them. I would recommend starting with the below links to begin your search for retailers who sell Fair Trade Items world wide, have fun and enjoy the goodies. If you have a Whole Foods or Trader Joe's in your town, those are must stops for perishable items to try quickly.

Ten Thousand Villages vs. One Sappy Mom - Featured Series Day 3

Today, I’m going to share with you, through a personal story, one other reason why I choose to purchase Fair Trade products - The Stories.

Because of the nature of the Fair Trade concept, there is typically a story behind the artists or farmers who produce these items. While you may never meet these individuals, you’ll always be able to tell someone else about their story, their village or the positive change your purchase made for them, their family or their village.

I shared this particular story a couple of years ago here, but it’s one that I just enjoy telling again and again:

The Story

One of my favorite places to shop during the holiday is Ten Thousand Villages, a Fair Trade retailer founded in 1946 with stores in the United States and across Canada. All Ten Thousand Villages stores are non-profit and are mostly staffed by volunteers.

Three Christmas’s ago, while shopping with my son in Carytown (you've heard that before), we made our usual holiday stop in, to see what unique gifts we could find. While I was off looking at the music in the CD section, my son and one of the sales ladies working were plotting over in the musical instrument section, working out a game plan, unbeknown to me at the time. After several minutes had passed, he comes to me and asks me to come over to where his accomplice was waiting....I mean, where they were. He begins to show and demonstrate to me this big metal bowl that hums. I could tell by the look on his face that he just had to have it. He was in awe for some reason at the sound and an apparent sensation he was getting. It was Christmas, so I decided to ask the sales lady for the price. At the tune of $98.00, I quickly said to my son, “not today buddy”, and suggested that he save some of his own allowance and return to purchase it later.

They weren’t ready to hear that; nor, were they ready to give up that easy. The wonderful sales lady (who turned out to be a volunteer) was on her job that day, because this is when she began her tugging at my heart. She started with the following…”These bowls are called singing bowls. They are solid brass and handmade in Tibet, used for meditation and sometimes prayer. Because they are handmade, each bowl has a different sound.” She then begins to demonstrate this, and hands another bowl to my son and continues…”this one, only cost $48.00” (remember... they had a head start on their game plan). She then gives me the larger bowl ($98), and continues…”Now if you hold this flat in your hand, and rub the wooden dowel around the outside of the bowl, the humming will start, and you’ll feel a warm vibration going up your arm, and into your chest”. Guess what? - I DID!!!

I tell you, it was a really weird feeling…I felt relaxed and at peace – EXACTLY where they wanted me!! This lady was good, and what she probably really wanted to say me to me was….”you’ll feel a warm vibration going up your arm and into your SAPPY heart!” But guess what? She’s not even finished with me yet…she tops it off with the following: “As you know, Ten Thousand Villages is a non-profit organization and the proceeds from the sale of these bowls, go back to an organization named New Sadle, where they offer FREE medical care to ARTISANS…(that would be the bowl makers folks)…in Tibet who suffer with LEPROSY!”

Need I say more? Okay, I will…we now have two $48.00 bowls downstairs in our living room, where my son has told the Leprosy story behind the bowl and has performed many demonstrations for guest who have stopped by. The second one was a surprise Christmas gift from me to my son, after he DROPPED..YES DROPPED the first one on cement the SAME day we purchased it! (word of caution: singing bowls don’t sing with a crack)– If you had seen his puppy dog eyes that day, you would have done the same thing!

Today is day two of a 14 day series on Fair Trade, leading up to Fair Trade Day on May 14th. Hopefully, by now if you don’t already know what Fair Trade is, I’ve peaked your interest. If you do already know about Fair Trade, hopefully you’ll learn something new and get excited all over again.

Welcome to my version of Fair Tradeducation 101, a one day, drive by lesson on Fair Trade. Please turn off all cell phones and pagers, pull out your pen and paper, and take some short hand notes and please don’t forget to leave your comments as you leave class today and remember to click a link or two for some brain food.

Don’t run away just yet, I promise not to bore you today with a lecture on the background and history of Fair Trade. There are way too many websites out here that have done all of that hard work. With my lack of time, I have no intentions of recreating the wheel. I’ll only provide the subliminal messages, and links to the well written details you need to know, and leave the in-depth research up to you...so, shall we begin?

What is Fair Trade?

Fair Trade is based on economic principles and social justice. I’m not pointing any fingers here, but it should already be obvious that it’s not your traditional commercial trading. Fair Trade improves the lives of millions of disadvantaged artisans and farmers in Africa, Asia and Latin America, by providing opportunities to trade and develop partnerships with developing countries. This partnership helps them to improve the lives of their families and living conditions, as well as build their businesses.

How do I know if an item is a Fair Trade Product?

The best way to recognize if an item is fairly traded is to look for a Fair Trade Label. There are several FT certifiying and promoting organizations in the world, but only a few big players. Click this link to find a list of Fair Trade organizations by country and type. Then visit their websites to become familiar with their labels.

What is a Fair Trade Organization?

A Fair Trade Organization is “a big dog“…they watch over manufacturers, producing communities and organizations to ensure that they are following guidelines specific to Fair Trading to ensure economic principles and social justice. Below is an example from the World Fair Trade Organization on a few principles that they hold their members to for producers (workers/artists). The above link will also take you to a page where you can search for FT products or organizations who are 100% committed to the principles of Fair Trade.

1. Gender equity - Women and Men are paid equitably for equal work. Fair traders recognize the value of the work women perform as producers and as leaders.

2. Healthy working conditions - Fair Trade means a safe and healthy working environment. Any children who participate in Fair Trade production are assured security, education, well-being and recreational requirements in accordance with the United Nations Conventions on the Rights of the Child.

3. Transparency and Accountability - From managers and commercial relations to prevent easy manipulation. Some are subject to external verification, audits and frequent self-assessments.

4. Investment in Producers -There is a commitment to producers to develop independence through long term relationships. An example would be the Tsunami in China. For commercial importers it is sometimes easier for them to just shift suppliers during this time. Fair Traders help their producer partners survive natural disasters and wars and when possible, and resume production and shipping.

5. Favorable Terms - Most Fair Traders extend several months of working capital to their producer on favorable terms in advance of receiving product; whereas, most commercial trading terms carry a 60 to 90 day wait for payment. These favorable terms of Fair Trader partners - typically 50%, allow producers to ensure material costs are covered and assists in preventing hardship, should items fail to sell. This favorable terms encourages producers to produce only quality products for their partners.

These are just a sampling of the economic principles that Fair Traders are held to. Most organizations follow similar guidelines with few differences. Visit WFTO for a complete list of their principles and participating organizations.

Well….that’s my drive by education for today. That should be plenty to get you excited about spreading the word and doing more research on Fair Trade.

Wake Up The World...Fair Trade Awareness

Today marks the first of 14, of a Fair Trade Movement to get 100,000 people in North American to take a Fair Trade coffee break on May 13 or May 14th. Fair Trade Day is officially May 14th and in an effort to support the cause (which I'm passionate about anyway), I'll be posting information to promote Fair Trade purchases and educate my readers at the same time.

The Theme this year of the Fair Trade Resource Network is "Wake Up the World". Every year As Americans, we lavish in a multitude of inexpensive goods, while 1.7 million people die for lack of clean water and basic sanitation. If we could just redirect some of our purchasing power towards Fair Trade products, whether it be weekly grocery shopping or during just a few of the many holiday's we celebrate all year, imagine what our dollars could to do help others in developing countries who are trying to help themselves - educate their families, obtain food, housing and medical care; and gain skills in marketing, product development and finance.

"Supporting Fair Trade isn't about just giving to another charity, its about empowering others to help themselves."

Over the next 14 days, I will be sharing with you why I purchase and support Fair Trade, and hopefully encourage you to think about doing the same. I will educate you on what I know, share with you some of my favorite retailers and products and hopefully encourage you to do the same and pass the word along.

Unveiling Economic Justice through Fair Trade

It Wasn't Humpty Dumpty This Time...

I'm afraid of a few things...flying, bridges, height, snakes just to name a few, BUT this week, I'm adding stairs to my list - that's right stairs and they happen to be the four bottom ones inside my house!

I was on vacation last week, and I must say it was quite enjoyable. I Didn't go out of town, didn't have any planned things to do, just enjoy the time off at my leisure. But, I guess my body enjoyed the time off a little more than I did and wasn't ready to go back to work Tuesday morning - seems it had more relaxing to do and it failed to inform me of its plans.

As I was headed downstairs Tuesday morning, right foot wasn't collaborating with left foot and between the two, one of them missed the 9th step and ......need I say more? Okay I will.....

I don't know how I got there, but I landed with my head at the bottom, (after hitting a plastic tub on it's way to the attic.) in a twisted fetal position!

First thought...Don't Move! Second thought...Medic Alert...why don't I have one! Third thought...where is the closest phone!!

After lying there for several seconds, I knew I had to move, because I was the only one home. I can say now and I did exclaim when could feel pain... Thank God! After picking up my glasses (which I heard crack and thought was my back) and slowly sitting up, I was a bag of nerves. My entire body was shaking, but I was alive and I was able to move. I made it to work that morning..slowly with a burning sensation that I remember from my epidural 14 years ago. I saw the doctor that afternoon (left armed with a prescription for inflamation and pain) but the reality of all things affected wouldn't surface until Wedneday and they went in the order as follows:

aching neck

sore right upper arm

sore left shoulder blade

burning upper back

sore left hip joint

sore left knee

I am happy to report, and still so thankful for being here, that I'm on the mend and feeling much better today. Still some lingering issues with my back and hip, but I'm so happy and blessed that it wasn't worse, that I'm not complaining one bit!

Jay Sharpe - Custom Made Jewelry in It's Finest Splendor

I recently had the pleasure of sitting down to interview an amazing jewelry designer and jeweler here in Richmond, Virginia. Jay Sharpe has been making premiere custom jewelry since 1990 and his work is absolutely stunning.

During the month of February, I was looking to spotlight an African American who has had an influence in the Arts and remembered Jay Sharpe, here in Richmond. While this feature is past its intended postdate, Jay Sharpe has left a lasting impression on me and my business that goes well beyond one month of celebrating.

Beginning his love affair with jewelry during his High School years, and receiving inspiration from his mother, he remembers bending and cutting up old bangles, making them into rings, and selling them for $4 dollars. The combination of making money and meeting young ladies seemed more than cool to this young teen.

His next confirmation came from watching and questioning his mother about women’s love for jewelry. Having explored art classes in school and his love for drawing and making things, creating jewelry was an easy transition for Jay Sharpe – “ Art and being creative is the same, it’s just different mediums…it’s which one you adapt to more easily”.

By his Junior year at Virginia Commonwealth Universities (VCU) Art School, Jay Sharpe had snagged an account with Nordstrom’s and used it as a business seminar project for his senior year, enabling him to learn all the ins and outs of production and business management. This seven (7) year business relationship, along with 24 other retail accounts along the way (scanning from Oklahoma to New York) was just the beginning of what was to come for this aspiring young designer.

Since then, Jay Sharpe's premier designs have been featured in national magazines and television shows, worn by celebrities and showcased in museums from here (Virginia Museum of Fine Arts) to New York.

Today, nestled in Carytown, one of the South’s Best Neighborhoods to shop, Jay Sharpe has his very own jewelry boutique and has been referred to as the best custom ring designer in Richmond. Mr. Sharpe described his first piece of jewelry as “pretty crude looking”, but I still keep it around to remind me of just how far I've come."

Today, his designs are far from crude and he refers to his designs as classic in nature – “my designs have evolved and changed over time. Today they are more classic, but I typically make pieces that I like to describe as attractive and eye catching and I always make sure to use the best materials.”

I asked Mr. Sharpe what it took to get where he is today, and he replied, “support from my family, working every day, long hours, tendinitis, repetitive stress syndrome, lower back pain, and a love for what I do. It’s exciting to see a piece building as you process and create it, and the excitement from my customers make it all worthwhile. I feel accomplished to just still be here today."

When asked what one new celebrity he’d like to see wearing one of his pieces, his response was – “First Lady Michelle Obama". She’s so very classy and respected, it would definitely be an honor.” Okay,If you’re out there listening Mr. President, Mother’s Day is in two weeks!

Jay Sharpe draws inspiration from his everyday life, people and things around him – “… I draw from fabric, clothing, conversations with people, just about any and everything. I’m very visual and my creative mind is always thinking, even when I’m having conversations.”

His design process time sounded very familiar to me, which lead our conversation to his newest venture – “sometimes, designs take a very, very, very, very long time - seriously! I’m now pulling from ideas that are like 4 to 5 years old. I wasn’t able to create them as fine jewelry, but with this new line of costume pieces..I’m able to do it all!”

Henleava is Jay Sharpe's newest line of jewelry and is named after his new born daughter and niece (Henle – Ava). He describes it as trendy and affordable. The pieces are made from non-traditional materials (new and recycled) and all pieces are created in the United States out of his own studio.

Launched in 2011, Mr. Sharpe is taking this new line out of the boutique and into the homes of women in Virginia. Henleava is exciting, fresh and getting a lot of buzz. Stylists (as his consultants are referred to) are having home parties all over town, and people love the designs and the affordability of the pieces.

African Americans throughout history have been met with roadblocks, and setbacks, but Jay Sharpe is just another example of how hard work, determination, and a dream can make it all possible if you have heart and a passion.

He’s a positive role model and volunteer for several non-profit organizations in the Richmond area that are geared toward African American youth. He teaches metal and jewelry classes at the Visual Arts Center of Richmond and gives back to the community regularly through his business.

Treasure's Found in An Afternoon

I met some friends for lunch today and lucky for me I got there early. As I surveyed the block for something to do until the expected arrival of the others, I peeped out a little consignment shop, with little expectations of finding anything to my liking. But boy was I wrong!

Front and center were three cases full of vintage, contemporary and all things jewelry..gulp !! I immediately felt my bank card hopping in my wallet, not with excitement about what jewelry we'd find to wear, but with excitement about what jewelry or components we might find to take apart and create something new!

Ten minutes later...I didn't have much time remember...I left with this......

Reveal and Give-A-Way - 7,000 Bracelets of Hope Hop

I've teamed up with Lori again for another fabulous idea to support the Global Genes Project that promotes awareness for rare diseases. There are over 7,000 identified rare diseases in the world - all with their own issues. Lori lives with a rare disease, so it is only obvious why she is so passionate about this project. Runako Designs is supporting the project because we care about Lori, we are supporters of positive changes in the world, and we live to help others. The goal is to be able to gift 7,000 bracelets this Christmas (2011) to families living with rare diseases, and at the end of this post I will reveal to you my contribution, followed by a chance for you to win your own special bracelet and a link to 112 other bracelets being revealed today!!

When I learned of this hop, I immediately thought about a young girl that I met while participating in a disabilities expo several years ago. Her family stopped at my booth and were immediately drawn to a holiday angel earring that I had made.

It was during this expo that I learned of the Angelman Syndrome. Angelman Syndrome is caused by a genetic defect on chromosome 15. Characteristics of this disease is very little speech (almost absent), developmental delays and frequent facial reactions. The most noticeable characteristic of this disease; however, is what appears to be frequent smiling and and outbursts of laughter...making them appear happy most of the time.

What really touched my heart this day, was when her father was considering purchasing a bicycle developed for parents with children with disabilities. They had never seen anything like this before, and neither had I. From our conversation, what I learned about this young girl, is that she LOVED to have the wind blow in her face and boy did she enjoy that bike ride around the expo with her father!! It was such a delight to watch her laughing and enjoying the breeze! Without a second thought I gifted her mother with a pair of the angel earrings.

After reading Lori's invitation to participate in this party, I found myself again, without a second thought, signing up to help in this worthy cause to promote awareness.

Here is my contribution to the Global Genes Project and all of the families who are living with a rare disease. I started out with many ideas, but decided to keep the design simple enough for anyone to wear everyday, as I have no idea who will be receiving it.

7,000 Bracelets for Hope...One At a Time

Tonight I'm working on my bracelet contribution for 7,000 bracelets for hope. Global Genes Project, a children's rare disease campaign is rallying volunteer support from the arts community and anyone crafty enough to contribute, to help raise awareness for children with rare diseases. There are over 7,000 rare diseases that have been identified, all with issues of their own. They are collecting bracelets that will be sent to families living with rare diseases this Christmas (2011).

I've joined up with Lori Anderson again in another blog hop to help support this great cause. Goodie Bag Arrived from Rings and Things!!!!

I love surprises, especially when it comes in the form of "anything" I can make jewelry out of! Today, I received my goodie bag from Rings and Things from their March drawing..

I've been watching the mailbox for a week now.........

and it finally came today!

After ripping the package open because my scissors weren't where they were suppose to be (am I the only one who can never find scissors in the house when you need them), I was tickled pink to find some pretty cool things I can play around with, give away and review. I've just been looking at them this evening, trying to think up something fun but I just had to share what was inside...

For starters there were some pretty cool wood charm filligree pendants. They are very light, and I can definitely see them in a summer design. Something light and airey.

Next up, were these gorgeous antiqued copper plated findings... and look another button for me to play with! The apple blossom button is a little too cute, and the toggle is beautiful. With the price of silver these days, I may have to consider a few alternative metals for a while, and I'm kinda liking these.

These were cute too, I love the copper pearled accent bead on these french hook earrings. The metal is black/antiqued copper plate..another interesting find. The wire is pretty hard, definitely not flimsy. Another great alternative for cutting prices right now or for some great budget priced earrings...

And last but not least...my favorites are these strawberry glass beads! Okay, so they probably will never make it to my shop window, BUT won't they be fun to wear this summer. They'd make a cute pair of whimsical earrings or go great in a bracelet or necklace.

So, right brain-left brain will have to started thinking of something to do with these goodies. I haven't decided yet, just which pieces I'll be keeping to make something nifty out of, but once I do, you'll be the first to know and what I don't keep, I'll be sharing with you!

Design on a Dime and Very Little Time...

It just wouldn't have felt right if I had been all prepared this past Saturday for a Black and White charity event. The only thing that was a definite at 10am Saturday morning was a black and white dress I purchased weeks ago. With little time to shop and a 2:00 pm soccer game, I was on a mission for shoes, jewelry, and everything in between like the start up of the Final Four at 6:00 pm!

Back home by 4:00 pm, I had 3 hours to wash hair, shower, make a jewelry set with some beads I picked up at Michael's, get dressed between running back and forth to watch the game and head out the door by 7:00 pm! Lucky me, left brain and right brain had been working together all day and I whipped this set up in 45 minutes flat....

All Fired Up..I Just Can't Seem to Get Enough!!

Ever get a itch to do something again and again? Ever can't seem to get enough of something fun? Well, I think I have the glass bug you guys, because I headed back to All Fired Up two weeks ago and made two more fused glass pendants...and this time, I used a friend as my excuse!

A good friend of mine had a birthday last month and I wanted to do something fun, other than your typical out to lunch work gift..boring! We had decided on dinner and a movie, which would have been great, if I hadn't gotten my first pendant back a week before our planned outing. I had an ah ha moment and she was all for it! I originally introduced her to jewelry making years ago and she was on board for learning something new and fun...a little hesitate at the idea at first, I might add, but it turned into an evening of laughter and fun, and this time I didn't forget my camera! Follow us on our journey..........

"ooooooooh..this is how they draw you in (minus that special friend to persuade you if you don't have one)"

"Then we spent 30 minutes or more trying to decide on colors"

"Then we got busy picking out pieces to work with"

"Then the creating began"

Yeahh me!!

I've heard that the first step to recovery is recognizing that you have a problem..."WELL, I HAVE A PROBLEM!!!" ...coz I just can't seem to get enough of fused glass, but I keep reminding myself that I HAVE to get my new camera first!! But there's a little angel on my shoulder that keeps whispering, get a kiln next!

Wire Art Magazine...Fresh off the Press!!!

There's a new wire art magazine in town and it's awesome!! Wire Art magazine is the newest design magazine for those interested in learning and developing their wire skills and becoming successful at selling their work around the world. It's a quarterly magazine put out by Jim and Kim MacKintosh of MacKintosh Jewelry Studios. It's available in print and a down loadable version.

I downloaded my copy of Wire Art a week ago and it is full of photos, tutorials and stuff you can use. If you enjoy flipping through pages and pages of ads, this is NOT the magazine for you! They've done a wonderful job of putting this first issue together and I'm looking forward to many more!

I had the pleasure of working with Jim and Kim two years ago, when they taught a wire wrapping class for my Jewelry meet up group. If you ever want to meet the kindest, friendliest, family lovingnest, jewelry makinest, jolly ole' good timenest people, (Webster is probably ready to blow up right now!!)..you need to meet Jim and Kim! We had the best full day of wire wrapping you will ever find in one class. Jim is an awesome teacher and it shows in this magazine and his wire wrapping books!

Fused Glass - My First Pendant and More!!

After ten days of waiting, (what seemed like months) I finally picked up my pendant that I made a couple of weeks ago at All Fired Up. I'm now realizing it's been too long since my last post, but to see my previous post on my fused glass adventure click here. I would have never guessed that I would be on such pins and needles to see the final results, but I was like a kid waiting for Christmas today, waiting to pick it up this evening after soccer practice; however, I was pleasantly surprised and pleased at my first attempt with fused glass.

All the way home I kept hearing this tiny little voice saying..."DO IT AGAIN, DO IT AGAIN!!...And guess what?......I will!

And...... I have more eye candy for you tonight! I was the lucky winner of two give-a-ways during the Bead Soup Party..can you see me doing a happy dance?

I won these Pretty Things ...(you'll get it in a second) from Sandi Volpe. Sandy had the "bestest" idea of going to meet Lori Anderson (Bead Soup Originator) at a show, and purchased these earrings from her to give away..well, I love the idea because look where they ended up! The irony of it is I also met Lori for the first time at a show in Virginia and purchased a pair of her earrings as a gift for someone else! So, yep, I'm the lucky recipient of a pair of Lori's earrings this time...Since I don't make much jewelry for myself to wear, I'm tickled pink by these! Visit Sandi's blog, she also makes beautiful jewelry.

The other items I won, came from Heather Pyle of Aquariart. I love all the different techniques and design elements that Heather used in this necklace. You have to see it in person to know what I mean, but since I won't be paying these pieces forward, the picture will have to do. She was very creative in designing this piece and I'm thrilled to have it! Again, another piece, just for me and I didn't have to make it!

I'm At It Again.....

For those of you who really know me, you know that I can't keep still for long before I'm trying something new. I'll try anything once, doesn't mean I have to like it or stick with it, but I'm adventurous and I will give it my best shot!

This weekend, I was in Carytown on a special mission (I'll be posting about that later) a popular area here in town. Carytown is home to many interesting things, such as our Annual Watermelon Festival, antique shops, ecclectic boutiques, one of a kind shops, vintage shops, jewelry stores, consignment shops, pet stores, restaurants, bead stores and so much more. It's the one place I always visit during Christmas, to find one of a kind unique gifts.

Typically, parking is a bear on a Saturday afternoon, but luck would have it, I found a spot directly in front of a little shop - "All Fired Up". Well, curiosity got the best of me of course, because all I could see was color peeking out the little shop window at me, calling my name..."Dee, come see". Naturally, I went in, what else was a girl to do?

Inside was wall to wall ceramic EVERYTHING! It was a paint your own ceramic studio, with dishes, cups, coasters, animals, houses, fish, ornaments, you name it, they had it. I didn't know where to start looking, my eyes were shifting every which way they could. But, then something said "stop...hold up...wait one minute"! There was a little angel that had dropped by to remind me of all the decluttering I had just done! (we all remember this post, don't we?) It was just as I was about to turn around and walk out, that something caught my eye....

Directly in front of me was a bookstand full of not ceramic, but glass. And over to the far right of that little bookstand was a little cubbie, holding something near and dear to my heart...a pendant (I say with a smile), not clutter, not something without a match, but a pendant..and now I was ready to ask tons of questions before my twelve o'clock appointment! After ten minutes of me firing questions and the shop attendant, happily answering, I was prepared to return in a couple of hours to make my first Fused Glass Pendant!

Two hours later I was back with sleeves rolled up and ready to go. Mind you..I had a camera in my purse that I was all worked up about taking pictures with for this post, BUT I got so caught up in the moment, I totally forgot to take my own photos. The photos you see here are from the All Fired Up website, but I will be returning and I will take my own pictures next time.

After arming me with all the essentials such as my base glass, my selected color glass (which I changed three times), a bucket of left over glass, glass powder, glass noodles,glass tubes, liquid glass, glue, cutting tools, marker, tray, table, chair and instructions, I was left alone to do some major damage.

(obviously, this is not me working on a pendant, but gives you an idea of the set up and the glass)

Just a note to anyone thinking about giving this a shot..powdered glass, may look like powder, but it's still glass. My fingers can attest to that after my little sprinking ordeal.

After an hour of glass flying on the floor, crocked cuts, and several design changes, my project was complete and ready to be fired. It is at this point that the nice ladies, come take your pice, label it, ring up your craft, and give you a return date to pick up. If I know best, I'm certain they'll perform some magic behind the scenes to it (like straighten it up) , fire it up in the kiln and make it look really pretty!

So now I wait...10 DAYS!!! But oh no, I won't just wait. In the meantime, I've already been researching on line, perfecting the cuts in my mind, watching videos and reading, I'll be drawing up a design and planning my colors, because when I go back...I'm doing it all over again, but this time in style!!

This is a really cool glass pendant from Into The Lights Studio from Etsy, just to give you an idea of the possibilities if you aren't familiar with fused glass. Mine will in no way turn out like this in 10 days, but I have a feeling I won't be giving up so easily on this project.

Traditions Revisited 60 Years in a Row

Twenty-nine years ago, I thought my parents had ruined my life, socially, totally, completely and forever! What they told me was the last thing any girl my age wanted to hear. I was just coming into my own, I was just beginning to socialize and enjoy life, I had entered my teen years - life was starting to look great, I would finally be able to wear my own clothes ~ and then it happend...they told me, they ruined my summer of 1982!

After nine years of wearing plaid at a private, co-ed Catholic, Kindergarten and Grade School (1st through 8th grade), I was sternly informed that I could NOT go to public school and that I HAD to go to St. Gertrudes! - an independent, ALL GIRLS Catholic High School! Four more years of More plaid, more uniforms, more girls and more Nuns!!

Well, I am happy to report, twenty-nine years later, - that while I thought my life had come to an end, things turned out pretty well, and I made some lifelong friends - and the social life stuff that I was concerned about...well, lets just say, it didn't hurt having a Military BOYS school in the next block!

So, what does all of this have to do with tradition? Well, tomorrow night, same time, same place, same Friday... I will be attending the St. Gertrude, annual Song Contest. Song Contest is a competition amongst grades, where they sing about the traditions and history of the school. Each grade level votes on a leader (someone with abilities), the students help by writing songs, themed to popular music, tv shows, showtunes, etc. One song HAS to be the school song and the judging is based on harmony, movements, coordination and originality. I'm sure there are other things, but you get the gist. Students dress up in their best plaid skirt, white gloves, dress blazers and pantyhose - and it's the one time during the year, they DONT have to wear brown loafers! Winning your Senior year is like making it to the Super Bowl..it's almost a mental must, and if your class never wins a song contest...well as my son says... well, maybe I won't say what my son would say..but I'm sure you understand.

Tomorrow night alumni, former teachers, current students and faculty, will gather together for the musical event of the year. There will be class colors everywhere (old and new), grades will compete after months of practicing and alumni will go onstage and sing the school song together.."St. Gertrude alma mater, we'll always love you, in all of our thoughts and in all that we do, through trials and tribulations we will every more"...-it's amazing how I still remember that... well, maybe not. Now that I think about it...when you sing it as much as we did during the year, I guess you might say we're all kinda brainwashed for Song Contest reunions!! Anyway, there will be an alumni reception, followed by the contest, and more likely than not, private receptions and hanging out aftewards as friends reconnect.

This has been one tradition that I've truly grown to love each year. With song contest, you don't have to wait for a class reunion every 10 years!

Easy Pendant Tutorial...It's Sharing Time...

How many of you grew up watching Mr. Rogers in the evening? I did, FAITHFULLY!! I really can't remember a "sharing time" on his show, but for some strange reason that phrase just reminded me of him, guess cause he's such a nice guy..."waaait for it" (smile) ..which leads me to this post...

Several visitors left comments or even emailed me asking for photos or a better description of how I attached my focal for the Bead Soup reveal this past Saturday. Having taught jewelry making classes for several years, I truly enjoy sharing with others in any way that I can, because there have been many who have shared with me along the way and I honestly believe that in time, I'm blessed for it in so many other ways. So, of course I'll show you what I did!

Without taking my necklace apart, the best I could do was draw it out for you. But I bet if you sat there long enough you would have figured it out on your own...it really was that easy! Soo..here goes:

How to attach a button and a coin bead with wire

to create a focal pendant

The secret to this particular focal was the beautiful Yellow and Red Retro coin bead sent to me from Erin Siegel my soup partner. The coin was a rather flat bead with a hole up the center. And guess what??? Artbeads.com has it by the strand in their Tuscan limited finds selection this week...how cool is that? (click the link above to buy bead)

The second secret is that the button had a hoop on the back like this: (okay, it's obvious I won't ever be a Disney artist)

Instructions:

1. Take approximately 6 inches of 20ga round wire and straighten. (this is my best guess, remember, I did not take mine apart to get these measurements)

2. Slide the wire up the back of the button through the center of the loop. Holding the wire in the center of the loop, begin wrapping the wire twice to the right, then bring it back under and wrap it twice on the left side of where you started ending with the remaining wire in the middle, straight up the back of the button, so that it looks like this...

3. Slide the straight wire through the coin bead hole like so...

4. Create your choice of hoop, loop or spiral with the remaining wire at the top. Whatever your choice of closure, make sure you wrap it tight enough, so that the two pieces don't wiggle. Your finished focal should like like this in the back...

Like I said...easy peasy!!

Bead Soup Blog Party - Designs Revealed!!!!

What is a Bead Soup Blog Party?

Each beader was paired up with another jewelry designer and tasked with sending the following:

~ A focal
~ A special clasp (not just a lobster claw)
~ Some coordinating spacers or beads

Using the focal and the clasp was mandatory, but we could use anything from our own stash to round out the rest, and choose to use the coordinating beads or not.

I was partnered with Erin Siegel and below is a reminder of the bead soup that she sent to me. I really liked the colors in this mix and paired with the floral focal pieces, I was quickly reminded that while it is still Winter, Spring is just around the corner.

And Here's what I brewed up.....

I really wanted to show off both floral focals. The silver button could have easily been a clasp, but that would have been too easy (remember this was a challenge). After wire wrapping the button using the hook on the back, I slid a piece of wire through the shell pendant, made a spiral loop and there you have a unique floral pendant show-casing all that's beautiful.

I then added some wire wrapping and chain for added texture and to give the piece a airey feeling like Spring....

I kept the earrings simple, so as to not take away from the necklace, but I did add some Hill Tribe daisey's and wire wrapping to keep with the theme...

And here you have it...my Bead Soup Creation!

I love how all the pieces turned out and I appreciate Erin for the wonderful challenge and the beautiful selection in beads. Don't forget to visit Erin from the list below to see what she made from my mix that I sent to her!

We've done it again - Loans are being repaid and we've been able to sponsor our 13th loan! Those who know me, also know how excited I am about posting updates about Kiva Loans! Team Runako has nine (9) loans repaid in full, 1 repaid 20% and 1 repaid 47%, the 12th loan was from one of our members. Our default percentage has been zero. Bead Soup - Pop Art Style

Well, you didn't think I'd show you the actual finished design did you?? You'll have to come back on the 26th for that!

What you see above is actually my sketch from last night. Early in the evening yesterday I pulled out my soup mix and played with it. If it was play-doh I tell ya, it would have been all over my fingers. I mixed and matched and twisted and turned and pulled and touched and moved things around quite a bit. When it was

time to go to bed, I left everything where it was, covered things up with a tarnish fabric and turned out the lights. Once my brain finally slowed down and stopped multi-tasking...(45 minutes later). I closed my eyes and BAM!! I saw it, I saw the necklace I wanted to create! My brain woke up at this moment as well and said "GET UP..sketch it before you forget it!" - the rest is history or shall I say Pop Art!

Soooooo, come on back Saturday, February 26th, when the Bead Soup Party hosted and created by Lori Anderson is oficially revealed for all 200 and more participants. we'll be waiting for you and I'm certain you wont be disappointed by anything you see!

A Tranquil Soup Mix Revealed....

I would love to be able to say that I finally received my soup mix from my Bead Soup Partner, but the fact of the matter is, I received it a couple of weeks ago, but I'm just finally getting around to taking some decent photos. Some of you may have already followed the link to my partners page (Erin Siegel) and seen the mix there. Nevertheless, here it is and I'm loving the calm feelings the colors are giving me.

Here you have a shell floral focal bead, and a silver metal flower button. I can't say that I've ever worked with a button before, so I'm really looking forward to doing something neat with that. Using the currant seed beads and the button, I could make a toggle closure or maybe it will turn into the focal.

This shot gives you a better view, of the Lemon Turquoise..yummy. These beads have some brown mixed in with them - do I see wood mixed in their future? I also have here some ruby red glass beads, and garnet glass.

Here's one more shot that showcases it all together. I've sketched a few designs out so far, but I still haven't decided what I'm going to do. I'm just hoping it all comes together before February 26th, when the final reveal is happening. I do my best work under pressure, so as far as my brain is concerned ~ I have plenty of time to doodle! ~ Nothing like some healthy stress, eh?

Runako Designs - Now available in EIGHT languages!!

Curiosity sometimes doesn't really kill the cat - I know because I'm a very curious cat if you don't already know that!

You probably already know that I'm participating in Lori Anderson's Bead Soup Party- right? And you probably know that I already received my soup mix - right? And you know my partner is Erin Siegal - right? And you know that Erin received her bead mix from me - right? And you know the reveal is in two weeks - right? And if you have no idea what I'm talking about click here for an update.

Well, what you didn't probably know is that the Soup Party is open to anyone with an established blog, anywhere in the country! I already know from my google statistics, that I get visitors from all over the world and I've had a few wonderful people who have followed me recently, and I can probably guess they've come from Lori's Party list. Aaaannnd - being the friendly, networking type of person that I am, I've also visited their blogs to return the hospitality. What I've found in my cruisings are some wonderful, creative new friends, to network and learn with. HOWEVER; stupid me, what I didn't count on was running across a blog that I couldn't read because of a language barrier...go figure...any blog, anywhere in the world, who would have thought, right? And I'm certain some have thought the same thing as they've run across an English written blog.

Well, curious cat here (waving hands) - I just couldn't take it anymore, I had to include these people in my network, and I had to figure out how to understand what they were writing about - Google to the rescue!

Thanks to Digital Inspiration I was able to figure out how to add a translation widget to my blog (see above)...actually I've added two for the moment. I haven't quite decided which one I like the most.

My hopes is that as more visitors from foreign countries visit my blog, they'll return and become friends if they see that there is a way they can actually read it. My second hope is that Lori will share this with all the party participants who's blog may be in a different language and they'll add the widget to their blogs and so on, and so on and so on! Wouldn't it be great, blogging with no limitations?

I just love happy endings... don't you? So, if you have a blog and would like to make it more readable for others who may not speak English, I hope this little infomercial has been helpful to you. No need to thank me, just keep coming back.

Don't Purchase Another Organizing Book...

Have no fear, I haven't disappeared again. I just took some time off from work and I've been decluttering around the house and doing a few projects. I'll be back by the weekend, once I dig myself out!

I should write my own book on organizing, since all the ones I've used in the past have steered me in the wrong direction. They've told me to organize and put away, store, give away, put aside for two weeks, then toss and trash. Well....why do I find myself, doing the same thing every six months?   The past 5 days, I've been writing my own chapter and its titled Clear Your Mind and here's what my philosophy has been:

1. Make Three Piles - As you approach each room make three piles - organize and put away, give away and trash.

2. Don't Second Guess on Clothes and Shoes - If you haven't used it in 6 months to a year, get rid of it, unless it's something that is definitely an occasional item (holidays, shampooer, seasonal clothes, etc).  Clothes ~ If you haven't worn it in two years, you won't wear it and you probably don't like it...give it away! If you're busy like I am, you already know you'll never make it to the shoe repair or seamstress...toss it or give it away immediately! WARNING: stick to this rule closely, there's a little angel that will sit upon your shoulder, telling you otherwise ~ KNOCK HIM OFF!

3. They'll never know - Gifts that you received and never used or wore, will never go unnoticed by the giver, give it away.

4. Do It Before They Get Home - If it it belongs to your child or husband, and they haven't used it in a year, get rid of it before they get home or while they are out of the house. If they do miss it...it's too late to get it back, and they'll get over it!

5. Cry and Move On - This is in regards to items your child has made or that you've been saving. Take a picture if its a gadget or something of that sort and purchase a memory book from the craft store. Go through your bucket of old cards and crafts they've made over the years that are flat. here's the key ~ if it brings tears to your eyes or makes you wail up, put it aside to go in the memory book; otherwise, in the trash it goes. I realized personally these things can definitely accumulate, I have a bucket from nursery school!!! now I have photos and about 15 pieces of art works for my memory book. WARNING: If everything makes you cray...get counseling, then TRASH IT!

6. Dishes/Kitchen Gadgets - Okay, we may differ here, BUT it's my philosphy and I'm sticking to it...it's too late anyway, I already gave it away! If you have old China, dishes, or kitchen gadgets that were gifts and you never used it, give it to a charity or church for someone who NEEDS it (fire loss, etc). I had china that was still in the box from the store from my wedding..hopefully it will be of useful to someone else. Okay, the silver I held on to...gonna take that somewhere and hopefully sell it. Crazy I am NOT!

7. DO NOT PURCHASE ANY STORAGE BINS AT THIS TIME - It's a trick I tell ya! Give it away IMMEDIATELY!

8. YARD SALES ARE A GIMMICK ~ DON'T GIVE IN TO THE TEMPTATION - Unless you plan to have a yard sale in the next two weeks that you've posted for or have already paid to participate in , and this is a DEFINITE - GIVE IT AWAY!! If you are a busy mom like I am, it will NEVER happen and you'll end up storing it and going through it again next year or in 6 months.  That same little angel will have climbed back upon your shoulder when your thinking about this..KNOCK HIM OFF AGAIN, but this time put him in the GIVE AWAY STACK!!

My way is probably definitely not for the weak at heart, but if you're serious about decluttering soon and giving yourself some piece of mind, follow the above steps and you'll be feeling better in not time!

Stew Your Eyes On This...

As you might imagine, this little fella was probably getting a little claustrophobic, let alone dry in that gold baggie I showed you last week. Well, he finally arrived at my bead partners house, so I can share with you tonight, what I sent to my bead partner, Erin Siegel. I'm having some technical difficulty with my camera, so please bare with my photos this month and my lack of a photo tent at the moment. This picture doesn't really capture the colorful element of this glass fish pendant, but it gives you a pretty good idea of what Erin is working with..thank goodness for photoshop!

Erin will be cooking with not only this glass pendant, but she has some sterling silver links, Bali beads, wood beads, a Hill Tribe toggle and some czech glass. I couldn't help myself, but I also threw in some blue sead beads that aren't in the photo..hee hee. I'll be posting a picture later this week of the stew mix I received from Erin.

Valentine's Day is just around the corner, and whether you're shopping for your significant other or someone special in your life, here are a few lovely things I ran across on Etsy tonight. Valentines Day was originally for lovers, but it's also a great time to tell anyone in your life that they are special.

This lovely necklace is from JudysDesigns. I love the asymmetrical design of this piece and it's something you could wear year round. The oxidized silver just adds that special pop to the pearls.

Creating with Soup....

As I post this entry, I realize it's been almost exactly one (1) year since I participated in one Lori Anderson's Bead Soup Party's. I'm happy to announce that I'm doing it again with over 200 other artists this month! I've just found out who my partner is this year and I can't wait to put together a soup recipe for her.

If you don't know what a soup party is, here is the recipe. I've been partnered with another jewelry artist to create a piece of jewelry from a mystery mix of beads that will be exchanged through mail. We'll have almost a month to create something to share with the blog community. Lori Anderson has been hosting this event for a year now and it has consistently grown to an astounding number of participants. Stroll Down Memory Lane - Part II

Earlier this week I posted some of my favorite necklaces from the past, today I share bracelets and earrings...enjoy the eye candy!

"Colored Rain Drops"

These Kazuri boats have to be one of my favorite artisan made beads. They come in the many different colors of Africa, they are unique and beautiful.

I never got around to naming these, once again I was rushing to prepare for a show. These artisan glass beads are made by one of my favorite artists. I usually eye a specific set for a while, then I just have to have them...like now..bout to purchase a set this weekend!!

This awareness bracelet was made for a co-worker who was diagnosed with Breat Cancer last December. I am happy to report that she is celebrating life cancer free and she looks great!!

This was a Mothers Day gift for my mom! It was the first watch I had ever made. Thanks to a fellow artists and her tutoring, it came out perfect!!

"Lemon Meringue" Another bead set that I absolutely adored!! They came in red, green, yellow and orange, I had so much fun with these artisan made beads. I made several pretty pairs and of course kept a unique pair for myself in three colors!

Ashamed to say..but these are MINE too!! If you look at them long enough, you will find yourself getting very sleepy. I never got around to naming them..so lets just call them

These were a special order request for someones daughter, who was stationed in Iraq. I was given basic instructions for hoops and this is what I came up with, the Peridot crystal is her birthstone the hoops were handmade and hammered for texture.

No name... holiday rush! I was in the mood for some mixed metals last year and I made several wonderful pieces. They sold pretty quickly, so I guess they represented a niche I had not tapped into. If I tried to make these this year, I would price myself out of the market..metal has GONE UP!!

"Kaleidescope of Life"

This is one I'll never forget! I had to finish the hole in most of these beads by hand. This bracelet was made to raise money for "Bead for Life". I made 12 bracelets and donated 50% of the proceeds back to Bead for Life. These things sold like hotcakes! They are beautiful in color and you can wear it with anything. The beads are handmade in Uganda and are made of paper...And yes I have one for MYSELF!

Other than long a design process and color coordination, none of the pieces I've posted this week are of aN intricate nature. Most of those items, didn't even make my favorites list! I think the few I've posted this week are my favorite because they have a story behind them that I remember, I can remember the process or the why behind them, they made someone especially happy, they were made for a special purpose, they are made of unique materials by a favorite artist or group and most of all, the finished product I'm certain, made me smile.

Resolutions, Promises and Goals - Part II

If you had the opportunity to read my post from Monday, you know that I've been thinking through some goals for this year. One I had already started, but the other two I had to think through to make sure I wasn't going to bite off more than I could chew at this time. Well, I'm ready to reveal, profess and get started..times been a waisting and its time to get busy.

I'm calling these...Goals...instead of resolutions, as in - something I want to achieve for myself. A resolution by definition is a decision or a process of resolving something. I figured, just because I make the decision to lose weight for example, doesn't necessarily mean I'm planning to do it or follow through. With a goal, one typically has a plan in place. You can even set small milestones along the way to achieving those goals. So here goes one, two and three.......

1. Re-ignite My Business

This is major for me! Last year I lost track of something near and dear to my heart - my desire to create. Life threw a few curve balls my way and after several failed attempts of getting back on track, I just couldn't consistently get back into the swing of things. My inspiration for this goal was photo I recently found of my sister-in-laws daughter on Facebook, who lives in the Phillipines. I had forgotten that my brother purchased a bunch of necklaces three years ago and really never asked who they were for since he works in Iraq. What a pleasant surprise to find Runako Designs in the Phillipines!!

My goal for 2011 is to set at least 1 (one) major, achieavable goal per month to re-ignite the energy in my business. I know this may sound redundant, but I figure if I can put a monthly goal to paper now, and post it over my workstation, I have something to work towards. And, the fact that I'm posting it here, would totally make me look like a failure if I didn't follow through! So to begin, for January, my goal is to plan my business year (put it to paper) and do a kick off beginning in February.

2. Yeah Me Project (YMP)...........
or in other words DIY! I must admit, that I had gotten a little lazy about doing things myself recently, but that's about to change. Actually, the past couple of months, I've completed a couple of small projects around the house and upon each completion, I stood back, took a look at my finished work and said..."Yeaahhh Me!"

For this goal, my plan is to complete at least one (1) DIY project a month. I also plan to sit down this month and think through what things I'd really like to accomplish. For January, I've already installed a new shower head, and next on the list is new bi-fold doors for my son's room. They are already sitting in the hall upstairs - talk about pressure!

3. Fitness Challenge

This last goal is totally about ME!! This past summer, I joined the gym if you'll remember, and I've actually done a pretty decent job getting my pressure in check and releasing some of the stress from work. HOWEVER, I must admit the holidays, along with a homemade German Chocolate cake, cookies, pies, Lasagna, hams,....oh well, you get the idea - I caved!! Not in a major way, but I caved, and lost some good momentum in my strength training workouts.

My former trainer told me about a fitness challenge here in town sponsored by FitVirginia; and you know I love a challenge, so what else was I to do? The challenge started January 1st and runs through April 1st. There are three weight loss catagories and 9 sets of prizes. The three first place prizes is $3000...that's right - say motivating factor please!! While I would love to win first place, my sites are simply set on challenging myself to get more fit! I have no idea how many people are signed up for this challenge, but I know that if I challenge myself for three months, something good will come out of it in the end, money or not - I will have accomplished something that's totally about me!

Well that's it! According to my life and the little doubtful angel sitting on my shoulder right now , thats a pretty hefty list; BUT, they were the three major things that meant the most to me, and that I felt I needed to put in writing to ensure completion. I even feel better as this post comes to an end.

I hope that for all of you who have made your own resolutions, promises or goals this year, that they are met with persistence and complete follow through. Resolutions, Promises and Goals....

Every year this time, we all begin to think about what it is we plan to do differently. Correction..by this time, we should all be doing what we said we were going to do. But for most of us, we either accomplish one or two of those things and fail miserably at others or all of them. I can't speak for the mass of you, but that has definitely been the case for me when I think about resolutions. So this year, my promise is to set a few goals for myself, put it in writing, then set out to make it happen.

By now, you've obviously picked up on the fact that I've done neither of the above, and the clock is ticking...so here I sit at my computer, with pen and paper and keyboard, professing to the world, my goals for the new year! Keep in mind...you, that I am but a mere mortal, subject to set backs, raising a teen, and suffereing the beginning stages of memory lost...so don't get your hopes up to high!

Tonight I will put it to paper, and Wednesday I'll reveal my top 3 (what did you expect) goals for 2011! Stay tuned, this should be very interesting!

Photoshop Elements Continued...The Healing Brush...WOW!!

Okay, so there is no surprises as to what I've been doing since last night. Well, other than having to get up out of my warm bed this morning and head to work, then drive home in the fresh fallen snow, I'm back at playing with my new Photoshop Elements software. I promise I won't post about this cool technology every night, but I just had to share my newest finding.

Unless the 2.0 version called this something else, I don't ever remember repairing a photo as easy as I did today with a cool tool called The Healing Brush! I'm pretty sure there was a tool that I've used to "try" to touch up a photo, but never this easy!!

Below is an old photo of me and my brother, that I've hated for the longest time because of the apparent tear in the photo. It's very obvious that it's worn and had been folded, and the white from the photo paper was showing through.

Well, with the click of a bandage, literally, and selection of a brush, all I had to do was slide that baby down the crak and WHALA!!!.......

It's not perfect, but now it just looks like his t-shirt underneath is all bunched up..you know boys are always slobs!...hee hee hee. Did you notice the edge of my dress? The healer even copied the tweed..how cool is that??....then with the click of my auto enhance....

And, by the way, I found a cool book at Amazon called Photoshop Elements 9: The Missing Manual, by Barbara Brundage. I downloaded it into my Kindle software and it's walking me through this program like a charm.

Learning is giving me a headache!....

There's nothing like having to learn something over again that you almost had mastered. You know that feeling you get when you feel like a big dummy? Your head starts throbbing from all the new? Well, that's the feeling I have tonight as I sit here looking at my computer screen. I just started working with Adobe Photoshop 9.0, and WOW... quite a few things have definitely changed including the location of things! You see, I previously had a 2.0 version...yes...that was 7 versions ago, and would probably still be using it, if I could get into my computer that crashed this summer!

New is good though, because there appears to be soooo many cool new features, but the problem I'm finding is there is no users manual readily available. When learning something like this, I need a hands on manual to look through, mark up and make notes. I guess I'm about to learn two new things - the newer version and how to study a different way.

The first cool thing I did notice was that the auto enhance feature is a lot smarter than the 2.0 version. With just two clicks of the mouse I went from this boring blurred photo:

to this bright and sharper version.........

Maybe I'll get the chance to entertain with other great features as I learn how to do some new cool things with photos. Next to my Nikon camera, Adobe is the next best thing when it comes to photography!

Holiday Themed Tag - Christmas Questions Answered

Wasn't sure what I'd blog about today, but thanks to Kayla over at The Eclectic Elements who always has great posts, I borrowed this Christmas Tag to pass along. Visit Kayla when you get a chance, she's always busy with something new and exciting.
Holiday themed questions, is the name of this tag, so here we go!

1. When do you usually know and feel that it's finally the holidays?
It's kinda hard not to know because of all the retail excitement, but for me it really feels like the holiday begins on Thanksgiving Day! All the family, food and planned shopping, sets the mood for the excitement to begin.

2. What do you want for Christmas this year?
A Nikon D5000 would be nice! But, if I have to come back down to earth, here goes...outside of Mother's Day, Christmas for me is the the next most special day of the year, if I can get through the day seeing family, feeling peace of mind and happiness in my heart, I'll have all that I need.

3. Do you go all out with decorations?
Not really. I hate the thought of putting it all away. I decorate the living room and front porch, accompanied by little nick nacks sparingly throughout the house.

4. What are you doing Christmas Eve?
Traditionally, I'm ususaly baking cookies and wrapping gifts. This year I would love to have all that done to be able to do some house hopping on Christmas Eve.

5. What are you doing Christmas Day?
Most of it will be spent in my PJ's around the house, then dinner is planned with the family later.

6. It's Christmas time. What are you reading?
Sales Ad's of course!

7. Favorite movie to watch during the holidays?
My favorite movie to watch during the holidays is Miracle on 34th Street. There's something magical about Christmas, and this movie has always been a favorite...matter of fact, I think I'll watch it today!

8. Favorite Christmas song?
"Back Door Santa" has always been a favorite of mine. It's an old Soul Christmas song, that my parents used to play around the house every year. It's so upbeat and jolly, makes you just want to dance. Next to that would have to be the entire Temptations Christmas CD..an oldie but goodie!

9. Favorite holiday drink?
Homemade Bailey's!! My co-worker makes it every year, and gifts me a bottle. It's my favorite for when I'm baking cookies and wrapping gifts on Christmas Eve!

10. How is your Christmas shopping going?
Not to bad, but not too good either. I'm always a last minute shopper...I do well under pressure!..hence the wrapping of gifts on Christmas Eve.

11. If you could spend Christmas Day anywhere else, where would you spend it?
Other than with my family, I don't think there's anywhere else I'd rather be!

12. Any holiday traditions?
Well....although Santa is now a myth in our household, I still do Santa Gifts and mommie gifts. Also, my soon gets a homemade coupon book every Christmas from me to use throughout the year, with things in it like, get out of cleaning your room, movies with a friend, an extra hour of tv during the week, etc. It's always been one of his favorites!

13. Favorite thing about the holidays?
My favorite thing about the holidays has always been the decorations and just the spirit of Christmas, minus all the commercialism. Seeing my son open his presents has and still is best, I'm still very secretive about it all.

Who Could Forget an Angel?

Every year for as long as I can remember, my office has participated in the Salvation Army's Christmas Angel Program. For those of you who are not familiar with the campaign, it was created to provide toys and clothese to children who are less fortunate or who's families have a financial need. You can typically find an Angel Tree located in most malls. Once a person makes the decision to sponsor an Angel, he/she selects a paper angel from the tree that lists the childs sex, age and wish list, to include shoes and clothes (with sizes) and a few toys. The angel is registered with an attendant, then returned at a later time or date to the tree location, with unwrapped gifts. Recipients pick up their gifts from a designated Salvation Army pick up location before the holiday.

This year, we decided to do something different. Instead of adopting an Angel Tree, we registered for the Forgotten Angel Campaign. Apparently, every year for whatever reasons, people with good intentions (I'm thinking positive), will select angels from the trees, but forget (thinking positive again) to bring back gifts. Families show up at the pick up site to pick up their presents, only to find that their gifts are not there. I can only imagine the disappointment of the children and families who were really counting on that extra support for the holidays.

By participating in the Forgotten Angel Campaign, you can donate what is considered extra toys, clothes and gifts for children and the elderly. When it is discovered that Angels have been forgotten, the pick up center is able to put together a package with the Forgotten Angel gifts on the spot!..How cool is that?! Our focus this year was on toys. For a first campaign at the last minute, I think we did a pretty good job.

It's probably too late to pick up an Angel, but there's is still plenty of time to "Give" before the holiday, whether it be your time, or something tangible. Below are a few suggestions if it's in your heart this season:

1. Volunteer to host a red kettle with your Salvation Army, by ringing the bell for a couple of hours
2. Sponsor a few care packages at a local nursing home. Check with the Administrator to find out what their needs are
3. Volunteer with Meals on Wheels and help deliver meals this Season
4. Adopt a family in need through a local Charity and provide a meal for Christmas Day
5. Do something nice for 12 diferent people each of the 12 days leading up to Christmas

These are just a few ideas to get you started. I'm sure there are plenty more opportunities in your local areas. Take the time this season to do something special for someone else.

My Favorite Things Thursday - I was 5 for just an hour!!

I had an entirely different post for tonight all thought out, until I got home and spent some time downstairs on the floor...doing what of all things?..........COLORING!! Yes, there is a story to follow.

I'm an HR manager for a food manufacturing company here in town. This year they decided to be creative with the Christmas cards for our business customers. Part of the Vision and Mission of our company is all about nourishing family's and the community with our great food products. Our products are all about Gathering family's together at the dinner time for a homestyle meal. So how fitting for them to ask our families to gather around at Christmas with the kids and have some fun coloring Christmas cards! The kids get to sign their names in the card along with their ages. I thought the idea was very neat and original for a business...my son on the other hand had too much homework!

So, for the past hour and a half, I've been decorating 5 Christmas cards by hand. I sat in front of the Christmas tree with the lights on and watched "Christmas with Dennis the Menace"...can you say THERAPY?? I'm going to say - THAT was the most relaxing hour I've had in weeks. Not a worry or care in the world, except what crayon to use next!

So my favorite things tonight are Crayons by Crayola! I did all the work and my son will get all the credit. Take a look at a few of "his" finished products:

Wednesday's Word - Cold!!!

Brrrrrrrrrrrrr, it's cold outside!! The past week, the temperature here has dropped drastically. Ever since the snow came through last Friday, it seems to be dipping daily. It probably wouldn't be so bad if the wind had not come with it, but so it is. As you know from a post earlier this year, Summer is definitely not my favorite season. I'd rather be cold any given day, then hot and uncomfortable. The way I see it - I can put on more clothes, but there's only so much I can take off, especially outside the house, when it's hot. So the fitting word for the day is COLD! Nope, no complaints here, I'm happy to see winter after 104 degrees this summer. The following is what the word COLD means to me:

Positive Change Tuesday - Show Me Campaign

Recognizing that there are many famous performers, actors and actresses out there who have foundations that support a lot of great causes, I'd like to highlighted one of my favorite music artists tonight on Positive Tuesday. I'm a avid supporter of anything educational and tonight's highlighted artist has my total support!

Grammy Award-winning John Legend created the Show Me campaign, that "fights for education reform in the United States. In Africa, to provide clean water, health care, education and other basic tools that break the cycle of poverty." His website states fact that more than 13 million children live in poverty right here in the United States! On top of that...more than one billion live in extreme poverty globally. Mr. Legends theory is that those children who grow up in poverty, likely stay in poverty. By providing good, quality education, it gives them the tool that they need to break the cycle. 1/3 of our American children don't even graduate from high school. These numbers are astounding!

Mr. Legend has led his campaign across the country and in Africa. In doing so, he wrote the song Show Me, that asks simple questions about why there is so much suffering in the world. The song was written to let people know what they can do about it and to encourage all of us to get involved on some level.
